For those who still think that video game music is 16 bits. You have to get to know this incredible Japanese video game composer Nobou Uematsu. Nobou Uematsu is self taught ! His music shows a very evident influence of Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, heavy metal and jazz. He has been called the "John Williams" of video games.
This piece is called Aerith. In the Final Fantasy 7 story line she was a flower girl from the slums but Cloud (a rebel warrior) finds her and they fall in love. She is the last survivor of the ancients and the only one with the power to stop Sephiroth. An evil being who summoned a meteor to destroy the earth. But Sephiroth kills her and Cloud lets her fall into the lake.
In many ways video games are the new storytelling of todays generation. Their composers do what ancient bards used to do. Joseph Campbell, the greatest mythologist in the world acknowledged the need for contemporary myths. I just don't think he had video games in mind.
